 CANCELLED.    iPad/iTunes/iCloud Workshop –This 2-session workshop will answer the questions: "How do I use the iPad and how does it relate to iTunes and iCloud". You will be introduced to the standard applications as well as some highly-recommended apps for the iPad. To learn iTunes and the art of importing your Music CDs and burning your own favorite playlist to CD you will use one of our classroom PCs - or you can also bring your laptop to class. Class fee $15

Prepare Your Taxes Using “TurboTax” Software Workshop is a two-session course that teaches you to use the current tax year version of the popular “TurboTax” software program to prepare and file your federal and North Carolina state income tax returns. Using a practice problem, you will focus on how to enter your income and deductions, how to check for errors, how to finalize the return, and how to use the electronic filing features of TurboTax. You will also learn how to import tax data from such financial software programs as Quicken and from brokerage firms and other financial institutions. Prerequisites: Students should have completed Computer Fundamentals or equivalent, be familiar with using a mouse, and have some confidence using a computer. Class fee: $15

Introduction to Digital Photography using Picasa is a hands-on course that introduces the student to digital photography. You will learn how to operate your camera, practice tips for taking good pictures, move around the Seymour Center to practice taking better pictures, and import your digital photos from your camera into the computer. You will learn basic and creative image composition using your camera. Then we will do some basic image editing, storing, e-mailing pictures and printing using Picasa. Making back-up copies of your photos will also be part of this course. Prerequisites: Students must have a digital camera and have a working knowledge of Windows. Please bring your camera, with its battery charged, your camera manual, a flash drive with at least 2 GB of space, and the cable that connects your camera to a computer to class. Exploring Windows 7 - This eight-session course will introduce the student to Microsoft’s Windows 7 Operating System. The student will be introduced to the basics of the Windows 7 desktop, Task Bar, the Start menu, how to find and launch a program and use the Help features. The student will learn the basics of file management using the new Windows Explorer, as well as, system maintenance and backup tools built into the Windows 7 Operating System. Prerequisites: Student should be familiar with using a mouse and have some confidence using a computer. Class fee: $25

Skype Workshop - Skype is a very popular way to stay in touch with your loved ones! Skype is a free program that lets you make voice and video calls and chat over the Internet using your computer's web camera and microphone. Calls to other Skype users are free, and calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Skype has recently added instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. Skype has 929 million registered users as of September 2011. In this workshop you will learn how to set up Skype on your computer and connect with family and friends. Bring to class: If your PC laptop has a web camera and a wireless adapter, bring it to class and you will have Skype up and running when the workshop ends. Otherwise, use our desktop computers.  Organizing, Editing & Sharing Photos using Picasa - You will learn to install Picasa, the free PC program from Google, and learn how to use Picasa to organize, edit and share your digital photos. In class, you will download your photos from your camera to the computer using Picasa. You will learn how to get all your photos organized into folders. Picasa’s editing features let you take out red eyes, improve color and contrast, crop for printing and add special effects and text. You will learn how to create slide shows with music, collages, computer wallpaper and screen savers, printed posters and gift CDs. You will create your own web albums, order prints online and share your photos with your friends. You will also learn a little about blogging using your best photos. Prerequisites:   (1) Students must have a working knowledge of their cameras and computers.  (2) Students must bring their camera to class with photos in them. (3) The camera battery must be fully charged. (4)Also bring the USB cable for connecting the camera to the PC. Class fee: $25

Problems ranging from “not shutting down” to “screen freezes” are more than likely a result of poor maintenance. The objective of this workshop is to make you aware of what things you should be doing on a regular basis to maintain your computer’s security and improve its overall performance and efficiency. Converting to and Using Gmail Workshop – This 2-session workshop will lead you through converting from your old email address to Gmail. Many students will do the conversion in the workshop, because Google has written conversion tools that make things easy!  Then you will learn many of the features of Gmail when using the Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers available in class. Gmail is the Google answer to email, chat and social networking. Practically unlimited free online storage allows you to collect all your messages, and Gmail's simple but very smart interface lets you find mail precisely and see it in context without effort. Gmail can retrieve mail from up to 5 POP accounts to allow consolidating your email. Connecting to Google Talk, you can do Video Chat. Gmail also provides one of the best spam filters to sort out junk and fraud, and even scans for viruses and worms, too. Prerequisites: If you let the instructor know ahead of time which old email system you are using, he/she can be ready when you arrive. Bring to class your old email address and account password. We will use these as part of the conversion to Gmail. And, if you don’t yet have a Gmail account, go to google.com and get one– and bring this address and password, too. Class Fee: $15

Microsoft Security Essentials Workshop - This free security software from Microsoft has become one of the world's most popular security packages. It is well-designed anti-malware with anti-virus and anti-spyware, rootkit protection and real-time protection capabilities. It is available for Windows XP (Service Pack 2 and higher), Vista and Windows 7, in both 32- and 64-bit versions. In this workshop you will learn how to install Security Essentials, remove your old security software and make the right settings choices. Class fee $15

Introduction to Your Mac & OS X Workshop – This 2-hour workshop is for Mac owners and students who want to know more before buying their first Mac. We will introduce you to the variety of Macs available today and then look at many of the Mac’s basic features. We will examine the elements of the desktop, dock, and menu bar; the Finder and OS X folder structure; setting system preferences (settings for folders, hardware, internet, printer); setting up user accounts; and give you an overview of the key software on your Mac.  Please note: Our classroom is set up only with PCs. Our instructor will be demonstrating and leading student exercises using a Mac laptop and classroom projector. Bring your own Mac laptop and do sample exercises along with the instructor. The instructor’s handout can guide Mac desktop users through these same exercises at home. When you enroll, include your email address so you can talk ahead of time with the instructor about your Mac and PC experience.  Class fee $15

Skype Workshop - Skype is a very popular way to stay in touch with your loved ones! Skype is a free program that lets you make voice or video calls over the Internet using your computer's web camera and microphone. Calls to other Skype computers are free, and calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Skype also supports instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. Skype has many millions of registered users.

In this workshop we will start by helping you connect your own computer or tablet to the internet. Then we will explore Skype's key features using our in-class Windows PCs. If you bring your own laptop or tablet to class, you must have Skype already installed with a Skype account name and password already checked out. To set up a Skype account, go to www.skype.com, click the Download button, and follow the instructions for setting up Skype for your particular computer or tablet.

Start times: If you'd like to bring your own device (laptop or tablet), come at 9am and be ready to connect to our classroom internet network. Otherwise, come at 9:30 and use our desktop computers. Skype instruction starts at 9:30.

 File Management Workshop – The purpose of this workshop is to help you become more self-sufficient in managing the information you choose to save on your Personal Computer. It guides you through practice exercises that use features of the operating system designed to create and organize “folders” that hold the information you produce or obtain from other sources. This will help you get started reorganizing your personal files and folders so that they are easier to locate and access. The skills practiced in this workshop are applicable to every task you perform on your computer. Class fee: $15.
