Technology classes are offered by Seymour Tech volunteers. For beginners, we offer our Windows-based Computer Fundamentals and our Introduction to the Mac Part I.

September 14: LastPass class changed so that it covers 1Password instead.

September 13: All classes & clinics are Zoom-only until further notice. These Zoom-only classes are free but you must enroll for each class by clicking the Zoom link at the bottom of each course description.

September 9: The Android Smartphones and Tablets class, Sep 17 to Oct 22 is cancelled.

What's New?

Zoom classes & clinics: You can attend via Zoom by clicking the ENROLL link for each class or clinic to register. Please do this no later than 3 PM the day before the class. We will email your Zoom link and class handout soon after that. There is no fee for Zoom classes & clinics.

Introduction to iPhone – The iPhone is an amazing all-in-one tool for phone calls, email, text, photos, music & videos. It is also a camera, e-book reader, Internet browser, and gaming device.  You will learn about gestures, Control Center, and Settings, how to use Contacts, email, iCloud, and the App Store. We'll go over the Camera and Photos apps, some useful third party apps and how to get help from Apple. NOTE: Due to the differences in the latest software, we will NOT be covering iPad in this session. See the iPad class below.

Ancestry.Com - In this 2-day class, we will cover the fundamentals of beginning to create your family genealogy using Ancestry.com. We will go through some actual examples, such as using the US Census, birth, marriage, and death records to tie them to your own family history.

In-Person-Only iPhone & iPad Clinic - Here is your chance to ask anything about your Apple mobile device. Note that this is not a class with an agenda. Please enroll by calling the Seymour Center, and then bring your device with you to the computer lab. One of our volunteers will help you.

Note: We will be limiting signups to 9 students. The first 3 students to sign up will be helped starting at 1 pm, first come, first served. The second 3 get helped starting at 2 pm, and if necessary, the third group of 3 at 3 pm. Sign up by calling the Seymour Center. Once we see your names on the roster, we will let you know which starting time you have.

Facebook on iPhones, iPads & PCs - The Facebook app is used and enjoyed by people of all ages. Facebook provides easy ways to exchange communications with friends and family. You will learn how to view and post your own photos, video, and messages. You will learn about posting on friends "Time-line“, "Commenting" on friends’ pictures, and real-time Chat. Personal security recommendations are also covered.

ID Theft, Computer Security & Backup: Protect Yourself - We spend much of our day on the Internet. You will learn many of the basic ways to protect yourself in this fast-paced online world. Of course, in spite of our best efforts, things can go wrong. You need to have good computer security software and a backup method in place for your data files, email and settings. We will discuss how to use Windows Defender and give you some easy-to-use computer backup alternatives.  And if you want to learn about a good Password Manager, consider signing up for our LastPass class.

NOTE: Changed class from LastPass to 1Password Password Manager - Ditch the sticky notes and get peace of mind. A good password manager will be your first defense against getting hacked. Password Managers allow you to generate and store secure passwords and manage your login credentials across all your devices, automatically filling in forms in web browsers and syncing your data across all your devices.

Using your Windows 10 PC, learn how to remove “Red-eyes,” crop, straighten, create panoramas, correct lighting, and create collages using the Apps available on Windows 10.  On day two we will work on photos you’ve taken, and we will edit photos on your laptop or bring them on a USB (flash) Drive.

CANCELLED Android Smartphones And Tablets 

This 6-session class - held in the Ashe room, not the computer lab - will show you how to use your Android Smartphone or Tablet.  Except for phone calls, these devices work the same way.  We’ll show you how to use the Home screen and Settings.  Phone users will learn to make and answer calls and manage your contacts.  Then we’ll explore texting and email.  We’ll search the web, play with YouTube, set up calendars, tasks & alarms.  We’ll use the camera for photos and videos.  And, we’ll show you how to find free & fee apps -- including games -- to personalize your phone and tablet.

CANCELLED Pinterest.Com - Pinterest is a pinboard-style photo sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, hobbies, and more. Users can browse other pinboards for inspiration, "re-pin" images to their own pin boards, or "like" photos. Pinterest is a tool for collecting and organizing things you love.

Google Photos - Back up your photos and videos in the Cloud. Google Photos works on both computers and mobile devices. Access them from any phone, tablet, or computer – your photos will be safe, secure, and always with you. Share your best stuff with family and friends. Google provides 15 GB of free cloud storage, which means you can store thousands of photos and videos. You can easily find photos or videos you took years ago! Learn to edit your photos and videos, create albums, and share them with friends & family. You can download items to your computer or mobile device again when you need them. You can send photos to online print services directly from Google Photos. PC and Mac users will practice backing up photos and videos to the Google Photos cloud using the Backup & Sync from Google app, and from your mobile devices. 

Requirements: 1. All students need Google account before class starts. 2. If possible, students should have a PC or Mac available. We will use them in the first half of the class. 3. All students using a smartphone or tablet should install the Google Photos app before the class starts. We will discuss using Google Photos on mobile devices on the second part of the class.

2 Sessions    Monday & Tuesday - October 4 & 5 - 1 to 3 pm    Mike Gilliom

Intro to Mac Part I - In this class, we will cover the basics of Mac hardware, and macOS features such as the Desktop, the Dock, Finder, LaunchPad,  & System Preferences. We’ll cover iCloud & Apple ID, the App store, how to avoid malware, how to use backup solutions like Time Machine and on-line options, and how to keep your Mac software up-to-date. Please have your Apple ID and password available. 

3 Sessions    Wednesday, Thursday & Friday - October 6, 7 & 8 - 1 to 3 pm    Glick Schultz

Getting Organized with Your Folders and Files - Now you really do have time to get organized! You'll learn how the pro's organize their Folders and Files. We'll use a PC for our examples, and Mac users can watch and learn, too. The key tool for PCs is the Windows File Explorer, and by the end, it will be one of your favorite places to land on a computer. The concepts we teach apply to any device - and cloud apps like Drive and iCloud Drive, too.

One of the exercises in this class is to download files from the web and save them so you can find them later. Click here to link to a Google Doc called Download This File and Save It.

The first session will end with a suggested homework assignment. We'll go through the homework in the second session.

Computer Fundamentals - This 3-day class gives the beginner or person with limited experience the basic concepts, skills and tools such as terminology, using the mouse proficiently, and mastery of the keyboard. You also receive a general grounding in word processing, file organization, and an introduction to the Internet, web browsing and e-mail. Bring your own Windows PC laptop if you have one. If not, use one of our Windows 10 PC laptops.

CANCELLED iTunes & iCloud on PCs - iCloud is a service provided by Apple that stores your music, TV shows, and other files in the cloud (online).  It also automatically pushes (downloads) your files to all of your devices so that they stay up-to-date.  iTunes can play your favorite CDs, Movies, Books, and Videos, but you can also import your songs into your iTunes Library.  Once imported, you'll be able to arrange your songs into playlists, share them with your other computers using iTunes, or take them with you on your iPhone.

CANCELLED Intro to Mac Part II - Here are the apps you should know. In this class, you will practice using Safari (the Apple browser), Keychain (to save passwords), Mail, Contacts, Calendar, review, Messages, Notes, and the Apple Office Apps: Pages, Numbers and Keynote. In addition, we’ll show you how to share many of your Mac creations as you collaborate with teammates, committee members, family and friends. You will learn to share things using iCloud - like your best stuff from all your apps. We'll have you tweaking and sharing your Photos. You will use Music, Podcasts, Videos. We’ll also introduce you to some must-have non-Apple apps such as 1Password, Firefox, Skype, Dropbox, and others. T

Google Drive and Google Docs

Introduction to Text Editing  - Computers have had a fundamental impact on the way we write and especially how we can revise what we have written.  This class presents an introduction to the fundamentals of text editing on a computer.  We will use Microsoft Word on a PC running Windows for our examples, but the concepts covered apply to any text editing program as well as to composing email, answering a survey, or even ordering groceries on line.

Zoom Class: How to Host & How to Participate in Zoom Meetings - Knowing a little bit about Zoom is a prerequisite for any of our Remote Learning classes. You will learn the basics for this widely used internet tool. We'll also teach you how to set up and host your own Zoom meetings.

Required: If you'll be using an iPhone, iPad or Android device, please download the Zoom Mobile Meeting app from your app store and set it up with your email address and password. Computer users should download the app to their desktops from the website zoom.us. For more help getting ready to use Zoom, click this link to our Zoom Help and Resources page.

We will send you an email message with the link to the class Zoom meeting. Just before the class is scheduled to start, you open that email message and click the link. Once everyone has checked in, you start learning. And knowing Zoom will get you ready for our other courses and to be your own Zoom host.

Photos on the Mac - Organize your photos. Perfect your images with built-in editing tools, or use your favorite photo apps. Create albums and share yur photos with others. Use iCloud Photos to store all your photos and videos in the cloud so they are available on all your Apple devices.

Introduction to iPad – iPads are amazing all-in-one tools for email, text, photos, music & videos. They are also a camera, e-book reader, Internet browser, and gaming device.  You will learn about setting up email, about Siri, iTunes, and the App Store. The advent of iPadOS makes the iPad truly unique from the iPhone. You can even totally replace other general-use computers with the iPad. You can add a real keyboard; in fact, your iPad will work with nearly any Bluetooth keyboard. 

NOTE: Due to the differences in the latest software, we will NOT be covering the iPhone in this class.

Gmail App on Your Mobile Device - The Gmail app on your phone or tablet is easy to use, has a powerful search feature, notifies you with push messages, works with Gmail and non-Gmail email accounts, and includes Google Meet as a feature, so you can start instant Meets.

CANCELLED Gmail & Google Meet on the Web - Gmail is a free, search-based webmail service that combines the best features of traditional email with Google's search technology.  Gmail provides enough free storage space for many people.  Any person can create a Gmail account; simply fill in the simple form.  You will be asked to give your name and country and to choose a login name and password to use each time you access your Gmail. You will learn how to import your contact list, transition your old email with your contacts, create emails, and how to respond to emails. We will also go through using Google Meet which is now part of Gmail and offers video chat and video conferencing.

Google Calendar - Put your schedule on any device & access it from anywhere. Use separate calendars for parts of your life - your clubs, your classes, your family, etc.. Then see them all at once. You can set up reminders so you'll never forget an event. Tell Calendar to add events from Gmail automatically. Add an event on your calendar and then invite others. It works with Zoom, Google Meet, Google Maps and many more apps.
