Apache OpenOffice 3.4 Workshop- This workshop introduces the student to a free Office Suite called Apache OpenOffice 3.4. Apache OpenOffice is a leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages. Student will receive a the instructions to installing Apache OpenOffice on their own computer. Class fee: $15.
Back Up your Computer using Carbonite Workshop – Backing up your PC or Mac is easy and automatic with Carbonite. The home page ad says “Set it. Forget it. And relax.” Just install Carbonite and it starts backing up your files to the internet cloud – automatically and in the background. No external hard drives or flash drives are used. Home computers can back up unlimited amounts of data for $59 a year. When you need to retrieve just one file, or all your data, go to Carbonite from any computer, enter your account ID and password, and start receiving it immediately. Prerequisite: If you have a laptop, bring it to class, install Carbonite and start backing up your data. Workshop Fee: $15
Computer Fundamentals gives the beginner, or person with limited experience, the basic concepts, skills and tools such as: terminology, using the “mouse” proficiently, and mastery of the keyboard. You also receive a general grounding in word processing and a brief introduction to the Internet and e-mail. Class fee: $40
Computer Maintenance - The objective of this 16-hour course is to make you aware of what things you should be doing on a regular basis to maintain your computer’s security and improve its overall performance and efficiency. You will learn how to protect your computer from various threats including: viruses, identity theft, spam, and spyware. You will learn how to use computer maintenance tools and how to backup your personal data files. Class fee: $40
Computer Maintenance Workshop – In this 2-hour workshop, you will learn that routine maintenance of your personal computer is vital in keeping your system running smoothly and efficiently. Problems ranging from “not shutting down” to “screen freezes” are more than likely a result of poor maintenance. The objective of this workshop is to make you aware what things you should be doing on a regular basis to maintain your computer’s security and improve its overall performance and efficiency. Convert From Your Old Email to Gmail Workshop – Frustrated with the limitations of AOL, Yahoo or Hotmail? In this one-session workshop, you will actually do many or all of the steps to convert from your old email program and email address to Gmail. We will go through the steps required to ensure that all your friends get your new email address, that your address book is converted, and that notes sent to your old address are automatically forwarded to your Gmail account. We will do some Gmail exercises and explore its main features. Prerequisites: Bring to class your old email address and account password. We will use these as part of the conversion to Gmail. And, if you don’t yet have a Gmail account, go to google.com and get one – and bring this address and password, too. Workshop Fee: $15
Converting To and Using Gmail Workshop – This 2-session workshop will lead you through converting from your old email address to Gmail.Many students will do the conversion in the workshop, because Google has written conversion tools that make things easy!
Then you will learn many of the features of Gmail when using the Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers available in class. Gmail is the Google answer to email, chat and social networking. Practically unlimited free online storage allows you to collect all your messages, and Gmail's simple but very smart interface lets you find mail precisely and see it in context without effort. Gmail can retrieve mail from up to 5 POP accounts to allow consolidating your email. Connecting to Google Talk, you can do Video Chat. Gmail also provides one of the best spam filters to sort out the junk and fraud, and even scans for viruses and worms, too. Prerequisites: If you let the instructor know ahead of time which old email system you are using, he/she can be ready when you arrive. Bring to class your old email address and account password. We will use these as part of the conversion to Gmail. And, if you don’t yet have a Gmail account, go to google.com and get one – and bring this address and password, too. Workshop Fee: $20
Everything Google Workshop - Google offers us lots of free, web-based programs along with the free space for storing the files we create or upload. In this workshop, we will examine several of Google's free programs, including Documents, Spreadsheets, Photos and Videos (Picasa), Calendar, YouTube, Maps, Earth, Blogs and Books. You will learn how these programs are used to collaborate on projects and to share your creativity with family and friends. Class Fee $15.
Exploring Windows 7 - This eight-session course will introduce the student to Microsoft’s Windows 7 Operating System. The student will be introduced to the basics of the Windows 7 desktop, Task Bar, the Start menu, how to find and launch a program and use the Help features. The student will learn the basics of file management using the new Windows Explorer, as well as, system maintenance and backup tools built into the Windows 7 Operating System. Prerequisites: Student should be familiar with using a mouse and have some confidence using a computer. Class fee: $40.
Finding Files Workshop - Over time, your computer accumulates many dozens or hundreds of important files: letters and other documents, photos and graphics, songs and symphonies, movies and podcasts. Your downloaded files from websites and email attachments are mixed in with letters to important people and recipes. Then, someone asks you send them one of these files in an email or on a CD. Can you find the file? Is it still on your hard drive? Did it get erased unintentionally? Are you running out of space on your hard drive? Do you back up your email messages and addresses? What about your Internet favorites? And, is all this hard work protected from computer viruses and spyware? Prerequisites: Student must have experience using Windows XP or later operating system and have some understanding of the concepts of files and folders. Class Fee: $40.
File Management Workshop - The purpose of this workshop is to help you become more self-sufficient in managing the information you choose to save on your Personal Computer. It guides you through practice exercises that use features of the operating system designed to create and organize “folders” that hold the information you produce or obtain from other sources. This will help you get started reorganizing your personal files and folders so that they are easier to locate and access. The skills practiced in this workshop are applicable to every task you perform on your computer. Class fee: $15.
Holiday Letters Workshop - With the holiday season approaching, this workshop using Microsoft Word, will show you how to create holiday letters or cards using your own pictures or pre-printed stationery. A brief introduction to creating your own mailing and return address labels will be presented. Prerequisites: Students must have familiarity with the Microsoft Word application versions 2007 or 2010. Class fee $15
Internet/E-mail provides the knowledge and skills to navigate “on-line.” You become familiar with search engines, browsers, and shopping online. You also learn to communicate with family or friends using e-mail. Prerequisites: Student should be familiar with using a mouse and have some confidence using a computer. Class fee: $40.

Introduction to Ancestry.Com Workshop - We will cover the fundamentals of beginning to create your family genealogy using Ancestry.Com. We will go through some actual examples, such as using the US Census, birth, marriage, and death records to tie them your own family history. Workshop fee: $15
Introduction to Digital Photography using Picasa is a hands-on course that introduces the student to digital photography. You will learn how to operate your camera, practice tips for taking good pictures, move around the Seymour Center to practice taking better pictures, and import your digital photos from your camera into the computer. You will learn basic and creative image composition using your camera. Then we will do some basic image editing, storing, e-mailing pictures and printing using Picasa. Making back-up copies of your photos will also be part of this course. Prerequisites: Students must have a digital camera and have a working knowledge of using Windows. Please bring your camera, with its battery charged, you camera manual, a flash drive with 2 GB of space, and the cable that connects your camera to a computer to class. Introduction to Facebook Workshop –Facebook is used and enjoyed by people of all ages. Facebook provides easy ways to exchange communication with friends and family. You will learn about how to view and post your own photos, video, and messages. You will learn about posting on friends "Wall“, "Commenting" on friend pictures, and real-time Chat. Personal security recommendations are also covered. Class fee: $15.
Introduction To Microsoft Office - This six session introductory course will introduce the student to Microsoft Office and its three most popular software offerings -- MS Word word processing, MS Excel spreadsheets, and MS PowerPoint presentations. Three sessions will be devoted to Word, two sessions to Excel, and one session to PowerPoint and will cover basic concepts and fundamentals of this software. After completing this course, students may continue to build their skills by taking the full MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint courses. Prerequisites: Students should have completed Computer Fundamentals or equivalent, be familiar with using a mouse, have basic understanding of a Windows operating system such as XP, VISTA or Windows 7, and have some confidence using a computer. Introduction to Microsoft Word 2010 Workshop - This workshop will cover a basic introduction to Microsoft Word 2010. We will cover the creation of your first document. You’ll learn to move around in your document, using formatting marks, moving text by using Cut and Paste, and changing line spacing and alignment in Word 2010. Introduction to Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird Workshop:
* Firefox has millions of users around the world. It is the free browser program that, with its Ad-on called Adblock Plus, eliminates most or all annoying adds from your screen. It is a refreshing alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer. It runs on PC, Mac, iPhone & Android phones (Firefox for iPad is announced but not available yet). Converting your Favorites or other bookmark lists to Firefox is quick and easy.
* Thunderbird is the free computer-based email program from Mozilla for PC & Mac. If you have several email accounts, install them all in Thunderbird and use its consistent user interface. You can synch your emails with your iPhone or Android.
Prerequisites: If you have a laptop, bring it to class and install both these apps. Also bring your email addresses & their password so you can install them in Thunderbird. Workshop Fee: $15
Introduction to Word Processing Using Word 2007 - You will learn to use the new ribbon interface, write and edit letters, reports and newsletters; change formats, fonts and character sizes; copy and insert text, drawings or charts to produce professional-looking documents; and set up form letters and simplify addressing envelopes and labels. Prerequisites: Students should have completed Computer Fundamentals or equivalent, be familiar with using a mouse, and have some confidence using a computer. Class fee: $40
iPad/iTunes/iCloud Workshop –This 2-session workshop will answer the questions: "How do I use the iPad and how does it relate to iTunes and iCloud". You will be introduced to the standard applications as well as some highly-recommended apps for the iPad. To learn iTunes and the art of importing your Music CDs and burning your own favorite playlist to CD you will use one of our classroom PCs - or you can also bring your laptop to class. Class fee $15
Microsoft Security Essentials Workshop - This free security software from Microsoft has become one of the world's most popular security packages. It is well-designed anti-malware with anti-virus and anti-spyware, rootkit protection and realtime protection capabilities. It is available for Windows XP (Service Pack 2 and higher), Vista and Windows 7, in both 32- and 64-bit versions. In this workshop you will learn how to install Security Essentials, remove your old security software and make the right settings choices. Class fee $15
Organizing, Editing & Sharing Photos using Picasa - You will learn to install Picasa, the free PC program from Google, and learn how to use Picasa to organize, edit and share your digital photos. In class, you will download your photos from your camera to the computer using Picasa. You will learn how to get all your photos organized into folders. Picasa’s editing features let you take out red eyes, improve color and contrast, crop for printing and add special effects and text. You will learn how create slide shows with music, collages, computer wallpaper and screen savers, printed posters and gift CDs. You will create your own web albums, order prints online and share your photos with your friends. You will also learn a little about blogging using your best photos.
* Students must have a working knowledge of their cameras and computers.
* Students must bring their camera to class with photos in them - the camera battery must be fully charged - also bring the USB cable for connecting the camera to the PC. Class fee: $40
Personal Financial Management using Quicken -Quicken is the personal financial tracking and planning software that lets you keep track of all your expenses and income, manage expenses with an easy-to-use budget process, track investment portfolios, and much more. Never again will your checkbook go un-reconciled. You will have all your income and expense information at your finger tips. Income tax preparation is simplified, and TurboTax users simply pass their Quicken file across and taxes become a breeze. In short: save time, eliminate accounting errors, stay on budget, and be ready for tax time! Prerequisites: For this class, you must have experience using a PC and should be the person in your home who balances the checkbook. We will do lots of practical exercises, using checking, savings, credit card and brokerage accounts. Class fee: $40.
Picasa Overview Workshop - This workshop provides an overview of using Picasa to manage and enhance digital photos. You will learn techniques for scanning your old photos into Picasa and how to add photos from your camera. Also Picasa makes it easy and fun to recognize people using name tags while creating slide shows or movies. Class fee: $25.
Planning your Travel Online Workshop – Introduces the student to Internet resources that will help them with vacation planning, modes of travel, and booking (tours, flights, hotels, and rental cars). The student will have hands on practice using travel sites, such as, Expedia, and Travelocity. Class fee: $15.
Prepare Your Taxes Using “TurboTax” Software Workshop is a 2-session workshop that teaches you to use the current tax year version of the popular “TurboTax” program to prepare and file your federal and North Carolina state income tax returns. Using a practice problem, you will focus on how to enter your income and deductions, how to check for errors, how to finalize the return, and how to use the electronic filing features of TurboTax. You will also learn how to import tax data from such financial software programs as Quicken and from brokerage firms and other financial institutions. Prerequisites: Students should have completed Computer Fundamentals or equivalent, be familiar with using a mouse, and have some confidence using a computer. Class fee: $25.
Search the Internet Using Google Workshop - The Google search engine strives to make it easy to quickly find whatever you're seeking, whether it's a web page, a recent news story, a photograph, advice, or a present for a friend. This three-hour workshop will cover the ease of use of Google, how it works, its features, its capabilities, how it displays results, and how it can serve your needs. Class fee: $15.
Skype Workshop - Skype is a very popular way to stay in touch with your loved ones! Skype is a free program that lets you make voice and video calls and chats over the Internet using your computer's web camera and microphone. Calls to other Skype users are free, and calls to both traditional landline telephones and mobile phones can be made for a fee. Skype has recently added instant messaging, file transfer, and videoconferencing. Skype has 929 million registered users as of September 2011. In this workshop you will learn how to set up a Skype on your computer and connect with family and friends. Bring to class: If your PC laptop has a web camera and a wireless adapter, bring it to class and you will have Skype up and running when the workshop ends. Otherwise, use our desktop computers. Windows Live Essentials 2011 - This workshop provides an introduction to Windows Live Essentials 2011, a free offering from Microsoft that includes several great features, the ones that will be covered in some detail are:
· Live Mail; a feature rich desktop email client very similar to Office Outlook. You can use this tool to manage multiple email accounts such Roadrunner, Yahoo, Hotmail, and Gmail from your desktop.
· Photo Gallery; a powerful photo organization tool that can help you effortlessly import photos from all kinds of devices and then organize and edit them efficiently.
· Movie Maker; a way you make movies from your photos or videos. You can create a nice movie complete with sounds, special effects, captions etc.
Prerequisites: Students should have a Windows PC at home. Windows Live Essentials runs on Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7. Class Fee: $40.
Working with Excel Spreadsheets - Gives the student an understanding of the concepts of spreadsheets. Using Microsoft Excel 2007 students learn to create spreadsheets, enter and manipulate data, and develop useful applications such as investment portfolios, budgets, maintain your checkbook register, lists, and schedules. Prerequisites: Students should have completed Computer Fundamentals or equivalent, be familiar with using a mouse, and have some confidence using a computer. Class fee: $40.
